dog parks

So, Geech isn't real great with other dogs. He's not aggressive or anything, but he just gets scared and runs away. I think it's because when he was really small, the big dogs in our neighborhood would bark and lunge for him. We have some giant, aggressive and loud dogs (all kept responsibly behind tall fences) on our street. He is sometimes okay with small dogs but a lot of the time, when he sees another dog, he is either not interested or pulls at the leash to get away. He does seem to like pugs an awful lot. I would really like him to have some puppy friends.

Do you think going to a dog park (fenced in, off-leash, area for small dogs) would be a good idea? I want to get him better socialized but I don't want to traumatize him by forcing him to be stuck somewhere uncomfortable. He's almost two and I think I need to get on this before he gets older and more set in his ways.

Any suggestions? I have never been to a dog park!

This is my current favorite pic of the beast:
