We have not had Smudge's shots updated this year (in March.) Our cat was diagnosed with cancer mid last year, so we were having to put out $80 a month for his meds (It wasn't untill recently he passed away,) and having Smudge's shots updated wasn't exactly our top priority. She lived inside, and we have no direct neighbors, so we didn't have to worry about other dogs or people.
Yesterday afternoon, before work, I let her outside to go potty. When I went out to call her in, I noticed something in the yard. A dead baby raccoon. I am sure she did not kill it, as I would have heard it (she's killed rabbits before) and the raccoon was not externally damaged, and neither was Smudge. No blood or anything. It must have died earlier in the day. Immediately I called her in (she wasn't by the coon) and called the vet. They informed me due to their safety, I would have to call animal control to test the raccoon for rabies and clear her before I could come in. I called animal control, but because I didn't see her bite it or it bite her, they wouldn't take the coon away for testing, however, I did get a good tongue lashing untill I was in tears. He told me if there was a bite, they would have taken Smudge for 6 months to be quarentined with no human contact or other animal contact what-so-ever. All because she was a few months behind in her vaccines.
He then called up my vet and told them they could take us.
Needless to say we got the earliest appt. available for her shots. Monday 4pm.
PLEASE have your babies' shots updated. I couldn't imagine having her taken away for 6 months and left like that.
