Do dogs need sunscreen?!
So what causes dog's to get more spots?
I know that sounds like a totally weird and random question....

We adopted our Boston probably 3 months ago now.... and he didn't have any spots on his little tummy. None (see below)
But now... now he's covered in them on his little naked parts! And you can tell by his light coloring that he has some other places on his body and has white fur over the top of them...

Is it like humans and they are just freckles, all be it big ones? Has he just been sunning himself in the backyard?

See... no spots here....

And here... spots....

Yeah, SarahRae is my wife and I'm the meanie who put that sticker on the dog.

He's a smelly one some nights.

I have no idea on the questions you asked but I just wanted to say that I LOVE your dog's coloring. I think they are so cute with all that white on them and their spots showing through. To your husband....they are all stinking ones sometimes :-)
Sarah Raesarahrae on May 4th, 2007 07:06 pm (UTC)
Yeah he's totally a cow! (the dog not the husband haha!)

I have no idea what to tell you about the spots, but I have to say, Wilbur is incredibly cute. Wow. And Otis could use a similar sticker, most definitely!
Sarah Raesarahrae on May 4th, 2007 07:07 pm (UTC)
My husband got a little over zealous with the label maker!
Susanbusysuzy on May 4th, 2007 02:48 pm (UTC)
Love the sticker!

One of my Bostons is like that. She had a completely white chest and belly until she was about 2 years old; now she's covered in those faint "spots." I asked the breeder about it, and she said it's just one of those things with Bostons. She had a word for it--don't remember. But it's unpredictable and doesn't mean anything. I have 3 other Bostons from the same breeder and only the smallest amount of spotting has occurred on one of the others.

hmm interesting!
Thanks for the info, now I can put my worries to rest.

My Lucy's "freckles" developed as well. I have no clue why but I think they are probably quite normal. Many bt's have them.

Wilber is beautiful! And yeah, my Lu stinks too.
Sarah Raesarahrae on May 4th, 2007 07:07 pm (UTC)
As long as it's normal, then no worries *sigh of relief*!
determinant on May 4th, 2007 03:22 pm (UTC)
our max had them and they seemingly increased as he got older. not sure what the were or where they came from. i think it's normal though :)
Sarah Raesarahrae on May 4th, 2007 07:08 pm (UTC)
Thats ok the most spots he gets, the more cow-ish he becomes!
determinant on May 5th, 2007 12:02 am (UTC)
yes, and that would be why we called max 'bull' ;)
Aliciapurestylee on May 4th, 2007 03:35 pm (UTC)

Sarah Raesarahrae on May 4th, 2007 07:08 pm (UTC)

I went away to college for a year. I left when he was about 1.5 years and when I came back to get him he was all spotted! I'm curious about lu and if shes going to get spots.
Sarah Raesarahrae on May 4th, 2007 07:08 pm (UTC)

what kind of sunscreen do you use?
Is there anything on the label I need to look for?
Or is there a specific dog sunscreen?

I have never seen a Boston like ours! Glad to know he's not alone!
Genevieve: hogwartsalwaysgenevieve on May 4th, 2007 11:12 pm (UTC)

I love that pic of Rebel, he is just such an adorable beast...

And you know my love for Hoggerton, few dogs inspire me to make clay things with their likeness on them!!!!
Genevieve: paintingalwaysgenevieve on May 7th, 2007 07:28 pm (UTC)
awe yes i know. his clay box is sitting just across the room from me right now!!

my boston did the same thing! when she first came... no spots... then about a month ago (?) spots started appearing. I asked the breeder and she said it was normal.

I LOVE Wilbur! Poor little stinky dude.

Two of my Bostons have had the spot thing. Just last week, I woke my husband up screaming about Edgar's pee pee dots, hahah. I swear, we went to sleep and there were none and then in the morning his whole groin region and his little weenie were covered in them! I think they're so cute.
tydyehippo: crytydyehippo on May 5th, 2007 01:23 pm (UTC)
Our Boston, Deez, was almost pure white when he was a baby (Well, his head) and the older he got the more freckly he got.... I think it is just something that happens with Bostons.

My pupps are stinky, too!!

I used this icon so you MIGHT be able to see some of Deez's fleckles... Yeah, fleckles...
tydyehippo: bosszillatydyehippo on May 5th, 2007 01:26 pm (UTC)
And yeah, I use sunscreen on Deez... Just plain ole baby stuff...

They do carry some at the vet/pet store but it was expensive. Like 10 bucks for a small bottle!
