Gambit is approaching his first birthday, and recently he has begun to act out in a way he never did before. He whines CONSTANTLY until he gets his way, and even when my husband and I ignore him, he just keeps on yowling. It's driving me crazy. He's also begun to act more and more aggressive during play - he will growl or even nip at me and my husband and bark when he wants our attention - things he never did before the past month or two. When we are walking, he will jump up and try to bite my pants or my knees.
I've said "no." I've said "no" very firmly. I've walked away from him (hard to do if he is at the other end of a leash). I've even held him and gazed into his eyes and said "SHAME ON YOU!" in the way his breeder taught me.
But he just does it again!! I would NEVER smack him or anything like that - I know how cruel it is to shame or abuse a dog. Either it makes them hate and fear you, or it just makes them more aggressive.
What other discipline options do you suggest?
I thought about a time out but I don't want him to think of his crate or any part of our home as a "bad place".
What tricks do you use?
