Training - Lie Down

I have an 11 month Boston Terrier, Beanie, who I adopted from a disabled lady last week. The lady did not do any training with Beanie, but the dog is very smart and has learned quite a few things (not to jump over baby gates even though she can, sit, don't run out the door the instant it opens...) in the last 7 days. However, I can not get her to lie down.
I've read quite a few websites that say to get her to sit (easy enough), and then lower my hand and the treat down toward the ground and she should follow it. She instead just stands up and leans toward the treat.
I've also read that I can gently ease her front legs out, forcing her to lie down... but in this case, she just pulls them back from me and sits up on her hindquarters to get her front legs out of my reach.

I'm working on gathering up/saving the money for a training class, but until then, I'd like to at least get her basics covered. Does anyone here have ideas or suggestions to teach her to lie down?? Thanks in advance. Oh, and a picture -
