Flying Questions.. Is he too big?? Pictures
Hi everyone. My boyfriend and I are planning to go to FL in November for 14 days. When we leave we would normally have the company I work for watch the dogs.

They are called The Pet Staff www.thepetstaff.com

(incase anyone is interested)

But it would be about $1300 to do that anddddd I think 14 days is a long time to leave them without us. So flying the dogs would actually be cheaper. We have two labs who would go in the cargo area and then Hogwarts who I would want to go in the cabin with us.

We are flying American airlines and and it says the animal has to be 20 pounds or under. He is 20!

Then it says:

Pet Carrier Guidelines
The maximum size for cabin pet carriers is 23" long x 13" wide x 9" high. Animals must be able to stand up, turn around and lay down in a natural position in the kennel.

I measured Hog and he was 15 inches High and 20 inches long... So he is not going to fit in a carrier that small am I right? Also when I looked at Petsmarts.com airline bags they were a lot bigger than those dimensions...

I know some of you have flown with your boston in the cabin so I know it's not impossible but are your bostons just really small? I really really really really don't want to put him in the cargo!!

Thanks for reading.

Piggyback on Daddy of course!

Could you use a dog purse? I know they make some for bigger dogs, and since the sides are smushy, he might fit better?

If Hog doesn't fit, he can come visit with us :) lol.

They don't allow dog purses on American Airlines.
They are so damn strict.

At PetSmart they should have the "Sherpa" brand. Medium and Large size Sherpa bags are approved by a bunch of airlines and they actually have a tag on the bag that you can show the flight attendants if they ask you.

My miniature dachshund who is rather long (obviously) and 10-11lbs has been on more than 50+ flights in a size medium and I've gotten "talked to" several times because they thought her medium bag was too big. Lucky for me, I printed out all the paperwork and had the tag that says its approved and everything so they couldn't kick us off the plane or anything. :)

So if a medium is pushing it, I don't know how they would feel about a Large, but you could try!

ohhh, links to all this please?? I think my Bell is old enough (and chilled out enough!) to fly now, and I'd like to take her with me some places!

I've been wondering the same thing about Virginia, so the answers here are very helpful to me, too.

The piggyback pictures are the cutest things ever! *loves Hog*

speaking of sherpa^ i know they make a carrier specifically for delta airlines, it might fit the specifications for AA, but I don't know if it will fit him...

Aww, piggy back Hogger! These pictures made my day. And I LOVE the ones of him sleeping. God I love his little face.

I stick with my original thoughts on the flying, though -- could you not hire someone to watch them independently instead? Two weeks is quite a long time for them to not see you, I know, but I am so worried about them flying. Esp. the big dogs. All I can think about is what if there are delays? I mean, they happen all the time and it's not like they'll let you just go get the dogs if something happens and they're in there for 12+ hours. They'll be treated just like luggage for the most part if they are in the cargo holds, which means they can get LOST just like luggage. So scary to me... :/

PS How long is your flight supposed to be?

My boston is the same size as hog. He is gotta fit.
I bought the delta pet carrier and she can turn around and stuff in there. Take him to the pet store with you and try them.

definitely dont put him in cargo.
oh my gosh hog is adorable. Amelie is 14 lbs and I fly with her using a carrier that turns into a backpack, rollaway bag and a car seat. its amazing. very similar to this one, but mine is a different brand.

it works amazing with it, and ninja fits in it too, he is 22lbs.

Re: this is it
the reason why I like these because carrying a 20lb dog with your hand just hurts alot, this way you can carry it as a backpack or you can wheel it around the airport, its on wheels, its great.
