Ear Hematoma
Yesterday I noticed a quarter sized lump on Albus' ear.  It was all squishy just like it was fluid under the skin.  This morning I took him to the vet and he has a hematoma.  We aren't sure what caused it, he hadn't been shaking his head or anything, but its there.

So he's scheduled for surgery to fix it Monday morning.  Anyone had this surgery before?

Cornholio had one of these before. As I remember, the surgery was pretty straightforward and they inserted a little tube into his ear for drainage while it healed. I don't remember it being a big deal, but his ear had a crooked bit and was a little deformed afterwards.

Rudy had a similar thing removed just last week. The doctor cut his little ear open and removed the lump completely and then stitched him up. The lump was around the "squiggly" parts of the external ear. He didn't need or get drainage tubes, just self-absorbing stitches (and a nice shaved area around the ear). Easy, peasy! And, the tissue came back negative for cancer, which was a HUGE relief.

Good luck to Albus! I'm sure he'll be fine.

we've had 4 hematomas in my house... two of my cats got them in one ear and their ears are now deformed... and my lab got them in both ears. her ears look fine, probably because they are floppy.

what my vet did was basically punch a bunch of tiny holes in the ears and tied string through them... like this. i think what that does is prevent another hematoma from popping up.
