So my 11-year old BT that I never see anymore (I'm away at college), has a terribly dry, flakey nose. No dry skin problems other than that, but it's like her nose is a dried-up shriveled piece of fruit! I know my parents have taken her to the vet for other things and I think the vet would have recommended something if it were a concern, since her lil schnoz is hard to miss, but I still think it must be somewhat painful and there's probably something that could be done about it.

This isn't a very good picture of it, but the brown area on her nose is where it's SUPER dry:

Does anyone else's piggie have this? Is it just an old age thing? Anything that can help it out?

I don't think it's an age thing. My 3-year-old bulldog has always had that, but not our Boston.

Adorable baby you have! :)

you can give her canned salmon as a treat, or vitamin e and fish oil drops in her food. :)

my parent's english bulldog's have dry little noses like that, they'll even kinda flake off, but it doesn't seem to bother them, i've put some vaseline on it before but they never seemed to mind one way or the other

my malamute has that problem & it is pretty severe, flakes will come off & she will start bleeding. i have been trying to remedy it with vitamin E & the vet told me to use a cortisone cream but it is not working. the next idea is that it could be a auto immune problem so they are going to do a biopsy on her nose i guess to make sure the white blood cell count in that area is normal? haha, i dont know much about this medical stuff.

i would say if its not severe to just use safe topical creams & vitamin E.

My vet told me it was common in older dogs when my dog had the same problem. She told me to put Vaseline on it, and it did help, but it never went away totally.

Your Boston is very pretty!

My boston got it when she got older, and we used bag balm on it. It helped quite a bit.

Thanks for the tip! I've seen that in drug stores before so I'll probably be buying some soon.

Oh! Isn't she precious!

Two of my four have the nose dryness. Sometimes I put a dab of vaseline on their little nosies...but it just seems to be a problem they have. Vet wasn't too concerned about it.

What's her name?
D.rustleofswing on December 6th, 2008 10:57 pm (UTC)
Her name is Zoe! :)

Neither of our Bostons have that problem, but our 13 year old Border Collie has a dry nose, my mother put Vaseline on it.

I second using bag balm, it should help.
Cute baby!

if you can find it, try mushers secret. we use it on the dogs noses at work (doggy day care) and if the dogs are there for a week or so, they are usually "all better" (or at least about 80%) by the time they go home. BUT, usually when dogs noses are like that it never gets fixed forever, so you just have to keep applying the stuff.

I'll take a look for that! Do you find it at doggie stores or the drug store?

What a pretty girl!

Our BT Virginia doesn't have that problem, but when it's cold and dry in the winter, her ears get very dry and flaky. Our vet recommended Bag Balm (which was originally made for cows' udders), and it helps tremendously. It's like a heavy-duty Vaseline. You can buy it many places; I got it at Drugstore.com. One tin lasts forever. I hope this helps.

What a lovely girl she is! Our Boston Zsa Zsa had a dry nose as she aged. The thing is, when you put salve on their noses, they lick it off!! Good luck with her!!
