Monty's Recent Luxating Patella Surgery
Monty had his second (this time it's the left leg) LP surgery recently (last tuesday) and he seems to be well on the mend.

I figured he would need the second surgery based on how he was carrying his left leg as of late November/early December last year. This was confirmed by my vet when we went in for a mid December check up. I held off until I saw Monty "carrying" his leg up regularly (or fairly regularly) and realized that it was "time".

That said, here's a pic of the boy convalescing at home.. check the "smile" on his face (you can kind of see the scar on his leg there..)

The vet said that my mom's dog has two luxating patellas in his hind knees too.
But he seems to not be having any problems with them yet. He's almost 3.... he runs and plays and never seems to have any pain. I get so worried because he's so careless. He LEAPS off the couch and I keep thinking of his poor knees!
How fast did the deterioration happen with Monty?
I know my mom won't pay for the surgery so this will definitely be something I take care of :) I'm already anticipating it down the road!

Well,

With Monty his first hind leg (right) occurred in March of '08 when I saw any signs - he was born at the end of June 07 - his first surgery was in May of 08. This time, I noted the strange gait in December of 08 and kept an eye on it. He was pretty good, in the sense that he could still do all the things he wanted to do - run, jump and leap but I started to note that he would, occasionally at first but then more often, carry his leg up - so he'd be on three legs. When the vet told me in December that the left leg was starting to give trouble, I knew I had to start watching him. I waited till now but probably could have waited even longer - the issue with that though is I would then have to let Monty have that "hassle" that much longer.

Now, that said, I think EVERY Boston is different. What happened to Monty will not happen to every Boston. I also believe that Monty must have been the runt of his litter because he was the ONLY boy left when I went to pick him out back in August of 07. I sort of half hoped that he'd be fine but after reading about LP and then realizing that, other than the LP, Monty's everything I would ever want in a dog, I figured that if he had to go through it, he'd have to go through it.

To be honest, I'd do it all over again because he's brought that much joy into my (and now my girlfriend's) life.

Luckily, I've got pet insurance that should cover 80% of the cost of the surgeries.

Cheers,

Max had both knees done
My Max had surgery on the right knee three years ago, and had the left knee done last week. He is doing very well, I'm the one feeling sad for him. He has been putting some weight on the left leg. I'm taking him tomorrow to the vet to remove the stitches. Max hates the cone thingie on his head, but too bad, its staying on.
