I’m not sure if this is normal, because I have never seen a dog do this before. I thought I’d ask you guys because you’re as dog-obsessed as I am (which is quite a fete, really.)

Sadie’s favorite toy is this Webkins horse that my dad got her. She loves that horse! We call the toy Pony and Sadie understands what we’re talking about when we say ‘Pony’ or ‘get Pony!’

It turns out that this thing is like a kind of security blanket for her. She will carry it wherever she goes. She won’t drop it for anything. We even hold treats in front of her and she won’t drop the pony for the treat. Ever! She sleeps in a position that looks like she’s hugging it. She freaks out when she can’t find it. She really went nuts when she had the cone on to keep her from licking her stitches because she couldn’t hold Pony in her mouth while wearing it.

I’m starting to wonder if this is a good thing or a bad thing. I don’t really know... She seems happy and it doesn’t keep her from eating (she drops it to eat and drink) or anything like that and she will go for walks without her Pony... Anybody have any similar experiences?

I think it's not that abnormal. Banjo destroys all his toys with the exception of a stuffed Peep that he almost always has with him at all times. He can easily demolish the toy so it's not like we finally found a toy he can't rip apart. He's currently under my feet sleeping with his Peep.

Otis has a lamb he's obsessed with. (Before that it was hedgehog, but I guess the hedgehog pissed him off, because one day I found an empty hedgehog shell with stuffing all over under the bed.) Otis doesn't keep the lamb with him all the time, but it's pretty frequent, and anytime we come home he runs and gets it, as if to make sure we're not going to take it away. He frequently sleeps with it, putting it on top of his paws and resting his head on it. Occasionally he'll take it outside with him, put it down long enough to pee, and then grab it and bring it back in. We've often wondered if he thinks of it as prey or his baby or what. We don't know, but we think it's pretty hilarious!

Not exactly the same sort of thing, but Fig ABSOLUTELY MUST take one of her blankets outside with her (to go to the bathroom). *shrug* She panics if I put her leash on and she can't find one and she physically resists if I try to pull her outside if she doesn't have it in her mouth. She'll carry it around until she finds an acceptable place to pee or poo, then puts it down and does her business. She always picks it back up and carries it in with her then. She never sleeps with it though, and doesn't seem to care about it unless we're going outside. People laugh at her and ask me why she always takes it with her. I just shrug and tell them she's weird. :-)

Gambit used to have a bear called Little Buddy that he dragged everywhere and nursed until he nursed it to death. He still remembers over a year and a half since Little Buddy went to the fabric graveyard, where he used to keep Little Buddy, and will sometimes go to that spot and sit expectantly waiting for him to emerge. It's sad. We've tried to replace it but he hasn't taken to any other toy. Daisy has a stuffed rabbit she's ripped to shreds but still drags around. Eventually that will need to go, it's getting filthy and I can't keep washing it, it's more pelt than toy now, lol.

Just as a tip, you might want to invest in a few more of these "Ponies" for when THE Pony finally bites the dust. It might be traumatizing for her to suddenly not have Pony.

molly goes through phases with toys...one minute she can't live with out it she's gotta have it IN the bed and around her at all times, the next she could care less...but her absolute FAVE is her "hank bone" that her "boyfriend" (my parents english bulldog) gave her lol...she KNOWS what that is and will play with it non stop for a while, then decide it's ok to play with something else. I can't tell you how many times i've woke up with a hard rubber kong bone in my bed!

our wednesday has a small inflatable ball that she obsesses over.. its weird, she snuggles with it often and prefers it over soft toys. i dont like the obsessive behavior so i do exercizes that put her mind on other things. i will take her ball and hide it for a few hours & get another toy for her to play with, or coax her not to search for her ball as best i can. it all depends on what behaviors you are ok with & which ones you are not.
