Obsessive licking??

Here's Miss Lucy - I have a question for you all, since there seems to be a lot of question asking going on right now. :)
Lucy seems to be an obsessive compulsive licker - she will lick you or other dogs to the point where it starts to seem strange. There is one dog that she licks the inside of his mouth and his gums and she literally did it for 10-15 minutes straight. She will lick our faces non-stop. Is this a Boston thing or just an OCD Lucy thing??

I am feeling: contemplativecontemplative

Our Muffuletta does the same thing. When she's in a licking mood, she will lick just about anything she finds in front of her face, and it takes a lot to get her to stop. Most Bostons I've met have been big lickers.

It doesn't bother me much, but sometimes I worry about her licking things she shouldn't and getting sick from them. So I'm just careful to keep an eye on whatever it is she decides to lick!

Scutter does that. A vet told us that it was a "taken away from her mother too soon" thing. Not really sure about that, but she's always been like that. We call Scutter all sorts of things in relation to the licking. Lickatongue (a pokemon), Licky Lulu, etc. She gives you "drive by lickings". She just licks and licks and licks. And when there's not people to lick, she'll lick the floor or the chair or her paw. She'll lick anything really. It can get annoying, but there's nothing to do about it. She's just a licker.

At least she isn't as bad as Charles. XD

LOL, we call ours "Lickasaurus" when she gets on the obsessive licking kick. Actually, we pretty much add "-asaurus" to just about any verb to describe her at different times. Hehe.

The vet told us Lucy was taken away from her Mom too soon as well. She was still suckling when we got her.

This is a dog thing. All of my dogs do this from time to time. :)

Chloe is a licker too, but it comes and goes - maybe it is a mood thing. She also got into the habit of sleeping under the covers near the foot of out bed and licks my foot just before she falls asleep - she does this for about 5 mins and then she's good for the night. I've heard of dogs sucking on blankets because they left their moms too soon- but yeah, every night the toe licking thing, Ive tried to stop her but it's just easier to let her do her thing and be done.

I say its a boston thing. My bostons lick everything. They lick the sheets untli they are drenched and tehn i dont notice and get into bed and eewwwwwwwww, but my basset doesnt really do it. My bostons are also always licking eachother, but not my basset. I mean my basset enjoys licking me, but he doesnt lick things or other dogs.

my sisters Boston licks us to the point we have to pull him off. they trained him with saying "daddy kisses" and once that is said he will jump up and go to town. our Cole likes to lick feet.

I wonder if we trained her to give kisses if that would help? Kind of like training a dog to speak helps with the barking.

Yep, Daisy is a licker, too. We call her "Diddy lick a lolly" or "lickalottapuff". I suspect she might lick for self defense. When I pick her up for a snuggle, when she is ready to be put down she will lick me non stop all over, in my eyes, up my nose, until I put her down out of sheer desperation to get away from her sticky little tongue, lol. Totally normal, as far as I know!! Gambit is very stingy with the licking, so every one is different, I guess??

We call Lucy "Licker Lu".

I think it’s a Boston thing. Oreo will lick us FOREVER until we pull her off and I routinely have to dodge sneak attack “kisses” when she’s on my lap! :)

Thanks all for the comments. I'll tell people it's a boston thing. It doesn't bother us, but we just had a party and people were commenting on it.

Marley is a licker. I really hate it when she licks my bedsheets and suddenly I roll into a spot of doggy drool. :(

Mine does that incessantly. I always thought it was his way of coping because he used to be in the crate 8hours a day everyday before I rescued him. His corkscrew tail still has callous and is patchy, heh. He licks through the bitter yuck too, bleah.
