Expressing glands

We've noticed some odd behavior with Violet, our Boston. We suspect the cause is her anal glands need to be expressed. We've tried to do it the normal way: a cloth over her rear, and then squeeze and push up. It's worked with our other dog before, but we can't get it work with her. We suspect that her stumpy tail is preventing us from getting at the glands.

Are there any tricks or different ways that people here have, other than going to the vet/groomer to do it?
