gasping sound
Petey has all of the sudden started making this weird noise.  It's sort of a mix between a yip, a whine, and a gasping.  We thought at first it was him yipping like he was hurt but he's started doing it at random times (like when he's under the covers still).  Has anyone else experianced anything like this?  I'm worried it could be something wrong and wondering if I need to take him to the vet.  He doesn't do it all the time and he doesn't appear to be in any pain, he's not limping or anything and nothing physically seems wrong with him.  There doesn't seem to be anything we are doing to make him do it.  I looked up reverse sneezing and it's not that type of a noise.

Thanks in advance!

I've always heard it referred to as the Boston "reverse sneeze" and it really isn't anything to be worried about. I'm sure someone else here will be able to give you more info on what it is exactly, but it has to do with their compromised nasal situation.

Sounds like it could be the infamous "reverse sneeze" to me as well, which happens due to their elongated soft palates. My female Boston does this when she's too hot, cold or excited. There is a surgery that can be performed to shave the palate but from my vet told me, it's a 50/50 shot of working. Plus, it's expensive.

reverse sneezing can come in an array of sounds. Is it over and over? Next time this occurs, try to pick him up and make a "seal" over his nose with your thumb. That works for bella if she's having a reverse sneeze fit.

If at all possible, try to get some video of him doing it and we can try to decipher it!

it doesn't happen over and over. It's just once. It's happening alot when he is under the covers and we pull the covers off of him...I'm wondering if it's not more of a startled sound...but it's so weird he just started out of the blue.

That kind of sounds like the noise Winston makes when he's dreaming, like a whining, whimpering sound. Not sure if that's what's happening with Petey though.

it does kinda sound like the noise Petey makes when dreaming, but a little different. And he does it when he is awake. But usually it's when he's covered up with the blanket and we move the blanket...so I'm wondering if it's a startled noise? But it's so weird he just all of the sudden started making the noise.

My Chinese Crested makes a noise that sounds like it might be similar. I never have (in almost 4 years) figured out what it is. He does it both when he's asleep and when he's awake - it's like he's breathing in but the breath gets stuck in his throat or something. *shrug* But it doesn't seem to bother him; in fact I don't think he even notices! Don't know if it's what Petey is doing or not....
