Puppy Help!

Hi!  Long-time lurker, first time poster.
First, let me introduce you to my new baby ~ Oliver!  He is eight weeks old and FULL of energy.

1.  How can I help introduce my new puppy to the family?
I have two other dogs (see my icon) and they are not too happy about their new little brother. They aren't being mean to him but they also aren't going out of their way to play with him.  When I first introduced them, both of my older dogs started to salivate uncontrollably.  Is this normal?  They just seem annoyed by the poor little guy.  Every time he tries to play with a toy my other Boston snatches it away from him and runs away.  I've been trying to make a big fuss over the older dogs so they don't get jealous.  I feed them first and I greet them first when I get home.  Is there anything else I can do to help little Oliver find his place in the pack?
I must have had it easy before because I had Pickles (the yorkie) for about two years and then when I brought home Lola (the boston) Pickles was just crazy about her.

2.  Crate Training 101
I am trying to crate train him.  He cries ALL NIGHT LONG!  I've tried keeping the crate in the bedroom with us but that doesn't help.  Someone today suggested a hot water bottle or something warm in the crate with him.  Any other suggestions?  How long does it usually take for a puppy to get used to his crate?
Again, I had it easy with my other two.  They adjusted to being crated very quickly....like in two days.

Or if there is a better community to post this to, I'd appreciate any suggestions.  Thanks guys!

1. that's generally a sign of stress. feeding and greeting the other dogs first will probably not help anything. their hierarchy has nothing to do with you. sounds like they'll most likely work it out on their own. as far as your older dog taking toys from the pup, this is fine - just give the pup another toy.

2. i dealt with this by lying next to the crate with my fingers through the bars. i only had to do it once.
actually my name's marina: this is my uh uncle.....errr doc.....errseverus on April 1st, 2010 07:11 pm (UTC)
he is adorable!!! my baby is only 10 weeks old so we're dealing with the crate thing as well. the only thing that really gets marty to sleep is if we make sure he's tired before we put him in there. we'll play with him and get him tired and when he falls asleep we put him in there with a blanket and some toys. then he'll sleep for a good four hours before waking us up!

we also got him a little pillow from petsmart that makes a heartbeat sound. it was only $10 and it helped a lot!
