We took Cornholio to the vet last night for a "checkup." Since he's lost his hearing, we are forced to admit even more that he is getting old, so we wanted to make sure that everything else looked good.

Apparently, hearing loss in old age for dogs is caused by the bones in the ear fusing together, and preventing the vibrations of the ear drum from getting to the brain. The vet said this is probably the case, but that his ears were also REALLY dirty, so he cleaned them (he's always had grody ear problems). So, he's all clean and shiny, but still can't hear. Other than that, he looks to be doing mostly okay. Still has cataracts, and the vet said that he is starting to lose the ability to control his back legs, or it might be because of his fused vertibrae. He is also becoming either lazy of incontinent, which we are kind of just dealing with since it's not his fault. Like we said before, getting old sucks!!!

But he can still get around and chase Maizy when he wants and get up and down the stairs, so his quality of life is good, despite the fact that he's a medical mess! He's a trooper. :):)

Here is a picture from Saturday of Corndog, me, and Maizy getting ready for a nap. :)

awww porn cornholio! he is such a cute old man!

my mom's dog is getting old and she can't go up and down stairs anymore (she is a sheltie) but she still tries to herd the cars that drive down the street *eye roll*

Hahahaha... hearding dogs are funny. Cornholio will still RUN after Maizy if she has a bone or something he wants. It's so cute because she'll just stand with it in her mouth while he looks for her, because he'll lose track of her. Then, he'll try to chomp her! :)

It's sad to watch them get old but as long as they still seem to be happy :-)

Yup, he still seems himself, so that makes me feel good. He doesn't ever appear to be that bothered by being old. :)

Aww! Poor Grandpaw Cornie! Atleast he's a happy old deaf dog. All of us here know that he's loved and spoiled. It's hard to watch them get old. My grandmother had a schnauzer that lived to be 20. We watched her grow old, but she had a happy life, so she was a happy old bitch.

And Maizy is getting so big! Heh. Easier for Corny to bump into when he loses track of her, hm?
NH: The great...xsaltyx on March 22nd, 2005 07:47 am (UTC)
Yup, he's plenty happy, it seems. He still gets lots of butt scritches and love, so he's doing okay! Plus, he gets babied now more than ever because he's a poor little old man! :)

And yes, Maizy is huge! She probably about doubled in weight in the 6 months she's lived with us. Corny is still not impressed or intimidated, which can cause problems just because she's so big. She doesn't go after him really, but she has smushed him with her paw a few times. They just have to be watched because Corny is a jealous little instigator!

:( Well at least he is still maing it around and has a loving home! If you guys don't make it up to BT meet-up it is totally understandable. You just give that little guy a kiss on the head from us.

When is the next meetup? I think that it stopped sending me emails, so I need to check out the website. If it's this weekend, I'll be out of town, but we will come to another one soon. I like spending time with Cornholio and he likes hanging out in the grass on sunny days. :)

awe poor Cornholio :( How exactly did they clean out his ears? Ive wondered if we should be doing.... They dont look dirty but im sure they are on the inside.. I dont know..
NH: The great...xsaltyx on March 22nd, 2005 12:17 pm (UTC)
Well, we have this ear cleaner stuff, but we mostly just wipe them out with tissue and then clean them with qtips. It takes like 20 qtips to get all the gook he has in there out, but he's especially gooky. I would imagine that just wiping them out would be fine for most dogs. You can see the crud in Cornholio's ears. I don't know what the vet did last night, though, because he took him "in the back" to do it. I'm sure you could find proper instructions for dog ear cleaning online somewhere?

Awwww... Gertie is so cute. The other day Cornholio had a little something on his head and I thought he was growing a Gertie horn, but it disappeared! Hehe.

He is such a cute little old man! I feel your pain on the growing old business. Buttons is also my first dog, but we got her when I was 11 (now 24) and she was a year so I'm pretty damn attached to this little snort. It makes me sad every time I go to take her for a walk and she's not trotting way ahead of me the whole time. She starts out ahead and ends up behind. But she's still got her spunk.
NH: The great...xsaltyx on March 22nd, 2005 05:47 pm (UTC)
Awww, Buttons has been with you a long time!!! I've only known Cornholio for about 3 or 4 years, but I am very attached to him! He has never been much for walking or um, any physical activity, according to my husband's family (where he lived before) and just spent most of his time sleeping. He would always sulk, though, after my husband would go visit him and then leave, so one day his dad just said "take him." It took a few days for him to grow on me, but now I love him to bits! :)
