We took Cornholio to the vet last night for a "checkup." Since he's lost his hearing, we are forced to admit even more that he is getting old, so we wanted to make sure that everything else looked good.
Apparently, hearing loss in old age for dogs is caused by the bones in the ear fusing together, and preventing the vibrations of the ear drum from getting to the brain. The vet said this is probably the case, but that his ears were also REALLY dirty, so he cleaned them (he's always had grody ear problems). So, he's all clean and shiny, but still can't hear. Other than that, he looks to be doing mostly okay. Still has cataracts, and the vet said that he is starting to lose the ability to control his back legs, or it might be because of his fused vertibrae. He is also becoming either lazy of incontinent, which we are kind of just dealing with since it's not his fault. Like we said before, getting old sucks!!!
But he can still get around and chase Maizy when he wants and get up and down the stairs, so his quality of life is good, despite the fact that he's a medical mess! He's a trooper. :):)
Here is a picture from Saturday of Corndog, me, and Maizy getting ready for a nap. :)
