My dog, Elliott, is a rescue.
We think he's about 8 months old, and we think he is a mix between a Chihuahua and a Boston Terrier.
We've had him for about 2 weeks now. He wasn't potty-trained when we got him, and we've been trying to housebreak him using crate training. Unfortunately, we're not around as much as we should be because we have to work, and he's begun acting out. At first, he was fine. He slept in his crate at night, and we took him to the backyard every time we thought he had to go. He was pretty predictable (he'd usually poop just after eating).
But these last few days he's gotten really bad. We take him out as often as we can, especially when we think he has to go, but he just hasn't been pooping outside. He's started to poop on our floor and on our couch and in his crate.
We realized that we should start taking him out on a leash, because he kept getting distracted by our neighbors dogs and cats and running around the back yard (shared with 3 other apartments). We also started rewarding him with treats more often when he went outside.
Yesterday when we got home from work, he had pooped in his crate and smeared it everywhere. Today I had a job interview at 10 a.m. I took him outside probably 4 or 5 times before I left at 9:30 (including once at 9:25). I knew he had to go, but he just wouldn't. I tried giving him plenty of time, but all he did was pee.
When I got home at 11 a.m., he had pooped in his crate and it was all over his body (including between his toes) and all over the inside of the crate.
I litter-box trained my last dog, because I thought it was inhumane to make her hold her pee or poo whenever I wasn't around (we don't do that to humans!), but I thought I would try crate-training this dog, since many trainers don't seem to agree with litter-box training dogs. Does anyone have a good argument against litter-box training dogs? Or for litter-box training dogs?
Does anyone have any suggestions? What are we doing wrong?
